Having Our Say

House Councils – Pupil Voice in St Margaret’s Academy

The purpose of the House Councils in St Margaret’s Academy is to allow pupils to express their ideas and to influence the life of the school.

Previously we have always had Year Councils in St Margaret’s Academy however with the introduction of tutor time this session we felt it would be beneficial for the pupils to identify more closely with the work of their houses and therefore our elections this year were centred on choosing House Representatives instead.

The principle of pupil voice remains the same; to ensure that pupils feel free to give ideas to better the life of the school and make St Margaret’s the most productive learning environment possible.

House Councils meet to discuss and sort out problems or issues arising in the school. These may include school lunches, behaviour or ideas for fundraising events. The meetings are held during tutor time and will be fortnightly.

During meetings each representative takes a turn to minute and chair. Also in attendance at the meetings will be the House Captains and Sports Captains who assist link teachers in organising meetings for the House Council and feeding back to tutor groups.

Minutes of the meetings are taken and fed back during assemblies and tutor time. It is the responsibility of the pupils to ensure they are publicising their work either on the school notice boards, Twitter feed or Facebook page. There are also a number of publicity convenors for each House who assist in this role.

Link teachers for each House are as follows:

Sinclair House: Mr Varty
Columba House: Dr Rice
Teresa House: Miss Watson
Aidan House: Miss McKenna/Miss McKeown

Since the new school year has already started there will also be a new house council.
